I believe they’re are only 2 compartments. The rattling you heard might have been the components moving around.. mine sounds similar.

i have 3 puzzle boxes… 1 is from Disney Land and the other 2 are from Disney World

Does it only have 2 compartments? Because my dad has his from when he was little, in perfect condition might I add haha, but I love opening it up and writing little notes for me to find years later. But it seems that every time I empty out the two compartments showed above there is still something rattling around! If you know of a third compartment please let me know!

There were two sizes of the Disneyland Haunted Mansion Secret Panel chest. I first picked up the smaller one in the early 70s. I seem to recall it was around $5. However, because of my young age, I didn’t take care of it and it was left outside where it was subject to weather damage.

I picked up a larger one either the next year or the year after, and I still have it. I think it was around $7. The puzzle box is easily my favorite Disneyland souvenir.

Quite a few years ago my wife bought me a puzzle box from a catalog that was exactly like the smaller one I first had (sans the Haunted Mansion picture, of course). It sits on my shelf next to my original DL secret panel chest. So you can buy the puzzle boxes themselves.
