Welcome Foolish Mortals

My name is Carrie Vines and I'm a little obsessed with Disney's Haunted Mansion. I'm blessed with a husband who supports my obsession and even encourages it. My kids, well...they barely tolerate it. But they're young and resilient. They'll recover.

My husband, Sam, and I have always celebrated Halloween with a little more enthusiasm than anyone else on the block. When we decided to start an annual haunt, we both looked to the Haunted Mansion for inspiration. It was then we discovered the collector's circuit and our calling. While searching the web for Haunted Mansion decorating ideas, I stumbled across Doombuggies.com and found my refuge on the internet.  I've met some of my closest friends on doombuggies, and spend my time there hearing other collector's stories, seeing their collections and the creative ways in which they displayed their pieces, sharing our defeats and celebrating our victories on ebay when we finally procured that one 'must-have' piece. If you haven't checked out doombuggies, go check it out. NOW. And then come back here and share your favorite Haunted Mansion collectible or tattoo or shrine to Master Gracey. You're among friends here.

Thanks for stopping by and just as in the ride, I will conclude here with Little Leota's haunting words:

"Hurry back… Hurry back! Be sure to bring your death certificate, if you decide to join us. Make final arrangements now. We've been  'dying’ to have you…”

Haunted Mansion Board Game by Lakeside

Dare you enter this ghostly retreat? H-M-M-M?

Haunted Mansion Board Game by Lakeside

I’m referring to the Haunted Mansion Board Game by Lakeside and Walt Disney World released in the early & mid 70′s.  I never had this game as a kid, but some time ago, my kids and I accepted the chilling challenge of trying to escape the spinning spooks and find our way out of this really fun board game.  We had a copy of the Haunted Mansion inspired board game that had been played and assembled years before we acquired it, and felt it was our duty to play the game once more before we bestowed it to a dear friend.

But there’s always room for one more….

This game, despite the worn exterior and split corners, has never been assembled or played.  All the pieces are still in their cardboard carriers and the token doombuggies and die are still sealed in their original wrapper.

I carefully took everything out to take pictures of this vintage piece of Haunted Mansion memorabilia.  The art, which might be or is at least inspired by Collin Campbell, is eye candy for mansion fans.  The backdrop of the game has two different views and the board game itself is tricked out with some spinning turntable gears and silly spooks ready to knock you out of play.  Even the raven plays an important role in the game, letting you complete the game, or sending you back to face the horrors within, again and again.

Check out this groovy version of Madame Leota, sporting long, straight hair. She looks more relaxed, doesn’t she?

Ready for a real treat? See the game in action. This amazing piece of work was created by Dale Ankrum. This is incredible! And in Dale’s version of the game, the doombuggies go right thru the spinning spooks!  I want to play his version instead… ;)

August 13, 2011 - 12:13 pm Laura - Loved this game! Thanks for the great pics!

June 13, 2010 - 6:08 am Ray Keim - When I was a kid The Haunted Mansion Game board (along with the game board for "Which Witch?) inspired me to create my own dimensional haunted houses out of cardboard boxes. Definitely a major influence and inspiration! Thanks for posting the pics, Carrie!

February 19, 2010 - 2:27 pm BadKitty88 - I wish I knew what happened to mine. I would love to relive the happy times I spent playing it. Thanks for the link for the video! Much appreciated! @Steve You have a REALLY good friend then. What a great gift!

September 5, 2009 - 10:27 pm Kreepy Karl - This is an awesome game! I loved playing it as a child. It is a completely random game though, with no skill required. The artwork is amazing. Recently, Shag paid homage to this game in some HM artwork. You can see the hanging skeleton from the game in one of his paintings. Dale's version is really cool too! I also would love to see this as a video game.

September 5, 2009 - 10:57 am charlotte - thanks for taking time out of your holiday weekend to entertain and delight us with your awesome posts!

September 4, 2009 - 9:43 pm ste3ve - Nice post. A few years back there was a guy who made and sold replicas of both the doombuggies and the little clips that hold up the backdrop, since everyone seemed to lose those. Many years back a friend of mine bought two partial games on eBay to make up one complete set for my birthday.
